UW-PARKSIDE HOSTS “MEANINGFUL AGING” PRESENTATION MARCH 23

KENOSHA, Wis.—The University of Wisconsin-Parkside invites health care professionals and area families to an afternoon presentation and discussion titled “Meaningful Aging Today and in the Future.” Featuring author and educator Dr. Susan McFadden, the program is Tuesday, March 23, 2010, beginning at 4 p.m. in the Student Center Cinema on the campus located at 900 Wood Rd. in Kenosha.

“Relationships with those we love change with time. How we remain in meaningful relationships with loved ones who face mental decline, how our friendships are affected by forgetfulness, how we deal with the news when people we cherish receive a diagnosis of dementia are issues that take us to the horizon of spirituality and our search for meaning. These spiritual challenges and opportunities presented by aging are what we’ll examine,“ Dr. McFadden said.

“Meaningful Aging Today and in the Future” is intended for people dealing with dementia, their partners, and caregivers as well as students in the fields of aging, communication, biology, psychology, and the social sciences. Young adults seeking to understand family members and friends experiencing memory loss are also welcome.

Dr. McFadden is a professor of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. She has co-authored or co-edited nine books on the role of religiosity and spirituality in the lives of aging adults. She also works with people at various points in the dementia process and is interested in how participation in creative expression programs influences social interactions and feelings of well-being among those living with dementia.

This program is open to the public. Admission and parking are free. It is made possible by a grant from the Helen Bader Foundation and the UW-Parkside Guest Lecturer Series on Aging.
